About the Department:

                Department of Physics of Dr. S.R.K. Govt college, Yanam, was established with UG Program in B.Sc - PHYSICS  in the year 2007. It was inaugurated by then Principal Mr. M.V.R.K. Chainulu and the First Head of the Department was Dr C. Mallikarjuna Garu. After the retirement of Sri C Mallikarjunu Garu, Dr B. Raghunathachariyulu Garu worked as the second HOD followed by Mr G Shankaracharyulu who came to this college on Service Spare. After Mr Shankaracharyulu Garu went back to MGGAC, Mahe. Mr S. Srinivas took charges as Head of the department in 2018.

Position of the Teaching posts in the Department: The sanctioned posts are 1 in number. Department has to teach not only students of B.Sc. Physics but also allied papers to students of B.Sc Chemistry.

• To Cater Quality Education and Knowledge to Rural Students of Yanam and Puducherry.
• To Enrich and Impart Scientific temper to students and establish a strong foundation to Undergraduate Students and enable them to pursue higher studies and take part in Research and Development of Science.
• To Make Student Self Reliable and make them to instrumental role to the Development of India.

Physics Lab:

Department of Physics, Dr. S.R.K. Government Arts College, Yanam is very well equipped with Modern Experimental Apparatus. Physics Laboratory is designed for 8 Experiments for each semester to First and Second Year B.Sc Physics Students and 16 Experiments for semester for Final Year B.Sc Physics Students. Allied Physics Students of B.Sc Chemistry also perform 7 Experiments per semester in their B.Sc Second Year. Aim of the laboratory Course is to gain practical knowledge and through observation and practice. Teachers in the Department motivate the undergraduate students by learning by doing method.

The Curriculum for the Physics Laboratory is designed to get hands on experience on the theoretical Concepts thought in the classroom. Students at Physics Laboratory perform experiments related to Mechanics, Optics, Thermodynamics, Electricity & Magnetism and Electronics. The Department Contains Sophisticated Equipment like Hall Effect Apparatus, CRO, Abbe Refractometer, Newton Ring Experimental Setup, Youngs Modulus Determination Experimental Set up, Potentiometers, Carey Foster’s bridge, Digital Weighing Machine, Fractional resistance box, Audio frequency (AF) oscillator and various Electronics and Digital Electronics Experimental Setup etc.

A total no of 426 Books is purchased for Department Library under UGC Schemes.

Innovative process adopted by the Department in teaching and learning:

• We have introduced soft computing & E- learning for students to perform Physics Experiments and visualize the concepts form websites like PhEt.
• Encouraging students to learn in Technology Enabled Learning Methods.
• 4 out of 10 Experiments are Computational Experiments performed using advanced online software.

Departmental Activities:

• Most of the students who studied in the department used to go further studies M.Sc (Physics ) and Choose Teaching Carrier. While some of them are interested to Software Engineering Job.
• The Department of Physics has very good lab Facilities and involve students in active learning process.
• Department has very good library facilities (420 books are available)
• Innovative teaching methodology like using computer animations and simulations is adopted by the Faculty of the Departments in Teaching and Practical Classes.

• Department has very good lab facilities to get good practical knowledge in areas like Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Optics& Electronics.

• Department Encourages the students to Participate in Sports and Co-curricular Activities.
• Department Organizes for Scientific tours to gain Industry& Research Experience.

Research Activities:

• Students are given Assignments to get the essence of ongoing research activates.
• Students are encouraged to take self-made Projects to enrich Research Ideas.

Future Plans:

• To Bring More Sophisticated Instruments for Lab like Laser Based Experiments, Digital Electronics Lab, New Electronics based Laboratory.
• To Improve Student Teacher relations and encourage them to take part in Project by providing the necessary equipment.
• To Establish Dark Room for doing Optics Experiments.
